Electrical faults are the leading cause of house fires in Singapore. Many homeowners ignore early warning signs until it's too late. Here are definitive signs that you need immediate electrical repair in your HDB or condo.
Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips: Your breaker is designed to protect you. If it trips more than twice a month, you have an overloaded circuit or a faulty appliance. Never simply reset it – get a licensed electrician.
Dimming or Flickering Lights: When lights dim when you turn on an aircon or kettle, this suggests loose wiring or excessive load. In older HDB flats, this often means the wiring hasn't been upgraded since the 1990s.
Burning Smell Without Visible Fire: A persistent fishy or burning odor from switches or walls indicates melting insulation. Turn off the mains immediately and call for emergency repair.
Warm or Discolored Outlets: Touch your wall sockets. If they feel warm or you see brown/black scorch marks, internal arcing is happening. Stop using that outlet.
Buzzing Sounds from Breaker Box: A faint hum is normal. A loud, irregular buzz means a loose connection or failing breaker. This can spark a fire behind your walls.
Sparks When Plugging In: Small, blue sparks are normal with some appliances. But large yellow or white sparks accompanied by a pop mean short circuits. Replace the outlet.
Aluminum Wiring (Pre-1985 HDBs): If your flat was built before 1985, you may have aluminum wiring, which expands and contracts dangerously. Signs include light plates that move or crackling noises. Rewiring is mandatory for safety.
GFCI Outlet Not Resetting: In bathrooms and kitchens, if the test/reset button doesn't click, moisture has damaged the internal mechanism. This leaves you unprotected against shocks.
Light Bulbs Burning Out Too Fast: If you replace bulbs monthly, check your voltage regulator. Singapore's standard is 230V; spikes above that destroy filaments.
Tingling Feeling When Touching Appliances: A light shock from your fridge or washing machine means poor grounding. This can be lethal. Stop using the appliance and check your main earth connection.
For any of these signs, search for a "licensed electrical worker (LEW)" in Singapore. Never DIY electrical panel repairs – it violates HDB regulations.
